For those that were waiting for the evidence, it's finally here! The impact of dairy on acne was always strongly theorized but data and studies were lacking to back up the claims... until this recent (2018-2019) meta-analysis showing dairy's impact on acne! Dairy’s impact on acne is most likely due to the hormones and growth factors that are present in dairy itself that can lead to hormonal changes that stimulate oil glands in susceptible people. Therefore, if you’ve been experiencing breakouts regularly while incorporating dairy, try giving it up for a couple of months to see how that impacts your skin. Since calcium and vitamin D are important nutrients, it is also important to supplement or eat foods fortifies with these nutrients while going dairy-free. Although this meta-analysis on dairy and acne is the most up to date data and shows a significant correlation (not a causation!), one must always acknowledge the potential inaccuracy of any study that monitors diet because it is difficult to do so.
FIY: by definition, a meta-analysis combines the results of multiple studies on a particular topic (in this case dairy and acne) to calculate an average result.
