Traveling alone with a toddler is not easy.
And I'm not here to sugarcoat anything or tell you that it is. There will be a lot of arguments (or tantrums, for some), activities dropped in your itinerary, unforseen shit happening, and so on. It will be exhausting physically, emotionally and mentally, and truth be told, you'd feel like you'll need a vacation after this vacation. 😂
But that doesn't mean it's not worth doing. 🤷🏻♀️
Solo dates have been a blessing for me and Wak. It has opened our eyes to learn about places, people, culture, like no other. Learning beyond books. Experiencing what the world has to offer.
I cannot wait to plan our next. 🌎
Holy shitballs, just like that today is my last day of Chinese class after a year of full time study. Since early Sep 2018 I’ve been attending the Mandarin Training Center at National Taiwan Normal University for classes every day, Mon - Fri. I moved to Taiwan not knowing a SOUL and with absolutely zero Chinese background and my god, what a language to be confronted by.
I decided to study Chinese here primarily because I wanted to live in Taipei. When I backpacked Asia for 4 months in 2017 I stumbled upon Taipei while in Bangkok, peering at the map figuring out where to go with my spare time before heading to Japan. The Gaga song “Donatella” came to mind where she sings “just ask your gay friends their advice before you get a spray tan on holiday in Taipei.” She made it sound like such a gay paradise that I thought fuck it, let’s just go and have a look (I was 3 months balls deep in backpacking by this point, planning trips based on random song lyric was about as logical as the journey was.)
Needless to say I fell in love with Taipei, the alleyways brimming with food and life, the plush cafes dotted around, the beautiful tourist hot spots, the ease of transport and the MANY cute boys. 😉 So basically I was sick of being a monolingual barbarian (my appalling Japanese barely counts) and when the opportunity arose to apply for a scholarship to study Chinese in Taipei that was that!
THAT all being said - studying Chinese is incredibly boring for the most part, the endless hours of writing characters over and over again, trying to attach some meaning to nonsensical abstract concepts and attempting to remember the tones, then the 把s and 了s of the world, good grief. I would never say the classes have been fun but I’ve certainly learnt a lot of shit I didn’t know a year ago.
Being a tad sentimental, I decided to have breakfast today at the same Starbucks (I know, a basic white bitch) I had my breakfast at on the first day of school one year ago. Anyway - time to head off to my last class!
This month. This group. Last year. No engagements.
Now, 10 out of 12 of us are engaged and will be married within the next year! 😳 What a crazy blessed year it has been! And Kenny is almost home! ❤️
